At Pro Performance Physiotherapy, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of technology and evidence-based practice to support your recovery. As part of your physiotherapy treatment, we also have shockwave therapy available to accelerate tissue healing.

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment, and works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon. This increases the blood flow within the affected area, stimulating cell regeneration and healing, and decreasing local factors which can cause pain. There is minimal to no downtime after shockwave therapy, though mild soreness or bruising may occur and usually resolves within a few days.

Common uses of Shockwave Therapy include:

  • Post-surgery scar tissue build-up
  • Overuse injuries
  • Tendinopathies (e.g. Tennis elbow, Golfer’s elbow)
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Patellar tendinopathy (Jumper’s knee)
  • Supraspinatus tendinopathy
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy

Scar Tissue Build-Up & Overuse Injuries

After surgery or from repetitive strain, the body forms scar tissue to aid healing. However, excessive or disorganised scar tissue can restrict mobility, cause pain, and delay recovery. Similarly, overuse injuries (e.g. tendinopathies) lead to tissue thickening and stiffness due to repeated microtrauma.

Shockwave Therapy supports recovery by breaking down scar tissue, improving blood flow, accelerating tissue repair, and reducing pain sensitivity—making it ideal for treating soft tissue changes from overuse or surgery.

Scar Tissue Build-Up & Overuse Examples:

    • Post-ACL Surgery: Helps reduce scar tissue around the patellar tendon to restore knee flexion.
    • After Rotator Cuff Repair: Eases shoulder stiffness by addressing capsular adhesions.
    • Chronic Tendinopathies: Used for thickened Achilles or patellar tendons to break down disorganised tissue and promote healing.

At Pro Performance Physiotherapy, Shockwave Therapy is available as part of our physiotherapy appointments. It is used to accelerate healing, reduce pain, and restore movement—supporting a comprehensive and targeted approach to your recovery.

    FAQ's

    Does Shockwave Therapy Hurt?
    K
    L
This is one of the most common questions asked about physio shockwave therapy at our Inner West Sydney clinic. Most of our clients say that while it feels uncomfortable some of the time, it’s also easy to tolerate and very quick to resolve. We can also adjust the intensity of the wave during your treatment based on your symptoms and comfort level.
Is Shockwave Therapy Included in My Physiotherapy Appointment?
    K
    L
Yes. When it’s clinically appropriate for your situation, shockwave therapy can be included in your physiotherapy appointment at Pro Performance Physiotherapy. For example, we often use shockwave for plantar fasciitis or tennis elbow if they’re slow to resolve. We’ll assess your symptoms, injury history, and recovery rate to determine whether shockwave therapy may benefit your condition. It can also be combined with physiotherapy, strengthening exercises, or rehabilitation strategies if they support better long-term outcomes.
Does Shockwave Therapy Work for All Ages?
    K
    L
Shockwave therapy is suitable for a wide range of age groups, particularly for people experiencing chronic tendon, muscle, or soft tissue injuries. At our Inner West Sydney clinic, we consider factors such as age, injury type, activity levels, and your overall health when deciding whether to include physio shockwave therapy in your treatment plan.
Can I Have Shockwave Therapy and Dry Needling in the Same Session?
    K
    L
Yes. Shockwave therapy and dry needling can sometimes be performed within the same treatment session if your physiotherapist believes both approaches may assist your recovery. These treatments are often used alongside hands-on physiotherapy, strengthening exercises, and rehabilitation programs to target muscle tightness, tendon irritation, and ongoing pain more effectively.
What Injuries and Conditions Benefit From Shockwave Therapy?
    K
    L

Shockwave therapy is commonly used for chronic tendon injuries, overuse conditions, and soft tissue problems that have been slow to improve, such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinopathy. Other conditions that may benefit from this treatment include:

    • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
    • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee).
    • Hamstring tendinopathy.
    • Gluteal tendinopathy.
    • Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy (calcium buildup in the tendon).
    • Supraspinatus tendinopathy (overload of the rotator cuff tendon).
    • Post-surgical scar tissue build-up.
